Welcome to Vieques, the largest of the "Spanish Virgin Islands". Vieques is a short 8 miles from mainland Puerto Rico but a very large 30-40 years step back in time. This island is what the Caribbean used to be and what most people want the Caribbean to be today! No traffic lights, no golden arches, just a pristine, natural setting which allows visitors to relax, walk white sand beaches, snorkel crystal clear waters, enjoy beautiful sunsets, see every star in the sky, and spend quality time with friends, family or coworkers.
Vieques is approximately 21 miles long and 5 miles at its widest (55 square miles total area), has less than 10,000 inhabitants, over 40 beaches, and 2 towns. All development is in a narrow strip of land covering 1/3 of the island. The other 2/3 is a nature preserve.
There are some obvious challenges with transportation but this ads to the charm and excitement of the experience. Its very much an adventure/eco-tourism destination but with 4-5 star luxury. |
